Manage a Greener Data Center
Today, many look for ways to help save the environment. Reassessing their daily lives for methods to reduce their carbon footprint and live greener lives. Data Center owners are no exception. Since computers, servers, and other electronic devices can draw a surprising amount of energy, even when turned off, choosing greener options will help to preserve ones budget. Not only does creating a greener data center help to save the planet, but it also saves the owner money in reduced energy costs. With sky rocketing electricity rates, a reduction in energy use is critical to maintaining the bottom line. Another benefit to reducing the amount of power required for ones data center is that it prevents incidents of blown fuses or brown outs from too high of a power draw. Either of these incidents can result in critical data, and business, lost.
There are several simple steps to take to begin to create a greener data center. One of the first steps to take, might seem obvious, but it is too often overlooked. Many physical servers remain unused, but they are still plugged in and turned on. This can needlessly waste energy. Servers not in use should be turned off and disconnected from the power source. Data which can be moved into virtual servers should, since it is the physical server equipment which draws the power. The power saving or power management option should be selected for all equipment as well. Just as its name implies, it helps to regulate the power usage of the device. Most electronics have this option including many computers and servers.
Trading up for energy efficient servers and efficient power supplies also helps to create a greener data center. When looking for power supplies, selecting high efficiency will ensure the largest amount of energy savings. Equipment designed to save energy is a simple step which will continue to save in operating costs over the life of the device.
Building a greener data center will help to reduce ones carbon footprint and save operating costs through lowered energy usage. There are no disadvantages to going green with ones data center. Be sure to consider the greenest options when building your data center.
